While newer models cannot be jailbroken this way, Amazon has not released any software to fix the issue with older units. Smart Technology Could Lead to Location-Based Tracking Earlier this month, security investigator Brian Krebs reported on a privacy vulnerability for both Google Home and Chromecast—found by Craig Young, a researcher with security firm Tripwire—that leaks accurate location information about its users. According to Young, attackers can use these Google devices to send a link (which could be anything from a tweet to an advertisement) to the connected user; if the link is clicked and the page left opened for about a minute, the attacker is able to obtain a location. Glitches Could Lead to Invasion of Privacy According to local news stations in Portland, Ore., a local resident received a disturbing phone call from one of her husband's employers telling her to shut off her smart home devices. After using Amazon devices throughout her home to control temperature, lighting and security, Danielle was made aware that a private conversation was accidentally recorded by Amazon's artificial intelligence system, Alexa, and was sent to a number on the family's contact list. 7 Water-Saving Tips for Your Yard Looking for a lush, gorgeous yard, but not happy about guzzling tons of water? The following tips can help you keep your yard stunning and your water consumption low. Don't drown. The greatest waste of water comes from applying too much, too often; much of the water is never absorbed. Instead of watering for one long session, water a few times for shorter periods and take 15-minute breaks in between each session. This will allow water to soak in while minimizing run-off. Watch the clock. Water between 5 and 10 a.m., when the sun is low, winds are calm and temperatures are low. Midday watering tends to be less efficient because of evaporation and windy conditions. Consider dripping. When it comes to watering individual trees, flower beds, potted containers or other non-grassy areas, consider applying water directly to the roots using low-volume drip irrigation. Divide by zones. Different plants need different amounts of water. Divide yard and landscape areas into separate irrigation zones so that grass can be watered separately and more frequently than groundcovers, shrubs, and trees. Water only things that grow. If there already is an underground sprinkler system, make sure the sprinkler heads are adjusted properly to avoid watering sidewalks and driveways. A properly adjusted sprinkler head should spray large droplets of water instead of a fine mist to minimize evaporation and wind drift. Be rain smart. Install a shut-off device that automatically detects rain or moisture. Rain gauge and soil sensor devices are inexpensive and take advantage of the free rainwater without wasting the metered water. Do routine inspections. Since lawns and gardens should be watered in the early morning hours, a problem may not be discovered until it is too late. A clogged head or a torn line can wreak havoc on both the landscape and the water bill.

6 Steps for starting a garden

Spring has sprung! And, if April’s showers didn’t bring you May flowers, don’t worry! There is still time to enhance your yard with a garden full of color and fragrance. Below are six simple steps for starting your own garden.

1. PICK A SITE First, you will need to pick the right location for your garden. When scouting locations, take into consideration the amount of sun exposure and the accessibility to water. You will also want to look for places that have healthy soil. To figure out what type of soil you are working with, you can take your soil to a local Cooperative Extension office or a local nursery to get tested. This will help you determine what plants will do best in your garden.

2. THE PREP Next, you will want to clear the planting area. Remove any sod, weeds or other debris that may be in the area. Then spread a 4-inch layer of compost or fertilizer. Using a spade fork, work the soil so that it is well mixed, soft and has decent depth.

3. CHOOSE PLANTS Where to even begin! Selecting plants can easily become overwhelming simply because there are just so many options. Do you want annual flowers or perennials? Peonies or roses? Should you get drought-friendly plants? The options are endless. The key things to keep in mind are your soil type, and how much time and effort you are planning to put into tending your garden. If this is your first time planting a garden, we would recommend choosing low maintenance perennials, such as sage, daylilies or catmint. Remember, this is the fun part! So pick a variety of different colored plants and flowers that will help liven up your landscape.

4. PLANT When it comes time to plant your garden, follow the guidelines on the seed packet or plant tag as closely as possible. Dig each plant’s hole twice as wide as the original pot. This will give the plant’s roots plenty of room to grow and ensure that the plants aren’t crowding each other. Also, make sure that the hole is deep enough that the plants crowns (where the plant meets the soil) are level with the existing soil. If the crown is above the soil, the plant may dry out. Or if it’s too deep, it may become over saturated with water.

5. MULCH Mulch is essential for conserving moisture and preventing weeds. Plus, it helps make your garden look fuller and neat! Mulch varies by region. However, whichever mulch you choose, spread it so that it is about an inch thick. Be cautious of piling too much mulch against the plants base because this will absorb too much moisture and cause the plants to rot

6. MAINTAIN The most important aspect of sustaining a garden is consistent care. Some plants are more demanding than others, but there is always upkeep to be done, whether it be planting, staking, watering, cutting back or weeding. Regular tending of your garden will allow you to see what plants do best in your garden, identify the ones that you don’t care for and help you prepare for future gardening adventures.
